How Long Does Collision Repair Take? A Realistic Timeline Guide

At Rogue Auto Body, we provide realistic timelines upfront and keep you informed throughout the repair process. Here’s what actually determines how long your collision repair will take.

Typical Repair Timelines by Damage Type

Minor repairs—small dents, scratches, or single-panel work—typically take 2 to 5 days. This includes a bumper scuff that needs repainting, a small dent repair, or a single damaged panel. The actual work might only take a day, but paint needs time to cure properly before reassembly.

Moderate repairs—involving multiple panels, some structural work, or parts replacement—usually require 1 to 2 weeks. This covers most fender benders and parking lot collisions. The repair itself might be straightforward, but ordering parts, insurance approval, and proper paint curing all add time.

Major repairs—significant structural damage, frame straightening, airbag deployment—can take 2 to 4 weeks or longer. These complex repairs require extensive disassembly, precise frame work, parts that may need to be ordered from manufacturers, and careful reassembly with proper calibration of safety systems.

What Actually Takes the Time?

Understanding the repair process helps explain why even straightforward repairs take several days. It’s not just the hands-on work—it’s everything that surrounds it.

Initial assessment and estimating typically takes a day. A technician needs to thoroughly inspect your vehicle, document all damage (including hidden damage that might not be visible), photograph everything, and write a detailed estimate. Rushing this step leads to supplements and delays later.

Insurance approval adds another 1 to 3 days in most cases. The insurer reviews the estimate, may send their own adjuster to verify damage, and issues authorization to proceed. Some insurance companies are faster than others, and complex claims take longer to approve.

Parts ordering and delivery is often the biggest time factor. Common parts might arrive in 2-3 days. Specialty parts, manufacturer backorders, or hard-to-find components can take 1-2 weeks or more. We can’t start certain repairs until we have all necessary parts on hand.

Paint curing time is non-negotiable. Modern automotive paint systems require proper curing between coats and before reassembly. Rushing this results in defects. A panel typically needs 24-48 hours of cure time after final clear coat before we can handle it for reassembly.

Supplemental damage adds time when hidden issues appear during disassembly. About 70% of repairs uncover some additional damage once we get into the vehicle. When this happens, we document it, submit a supplemental claim to insurance, wait for approval, and potentially order additional parts. This can add 3-5 days to the original timeline.

Common Delays and How to Avoid Them

Parts availability is the most common delay. Discontinued models, imported vehicles, and brand-new models often face parts shortages. Some manufacturers have longer lead times than others. We mitigate this by ordering parts immediately after insurance approval rather than waiting until the car enters the shop.

Insurance disputes slow things down when adjusters and repair shops disagree on repair procedures or part choices. Most are resolved quickly, but some require back-and-forth negotiation. Having a shop experienced in insurance work helps—we know how to document concerns and communicate effectively with adjusters.

Customer delays happen when we need decisions from you—choosing between repair options, approving additional work, or providing insurance information. We try to anticipate these and reach out proactively, but delayed responses add days to the timeline.

Shop capacity affects scheduling. Even if your repair only takes 3 days of work, you might wait a few days for an open bay if the shop is busy. Most reputable shops schedule work to minimize these delays, but during busy periods, some wait is inevitable.

How to Speed Up Your Repair

File your insurance claim immediately. Don’t wait to start the claims process. The sooner your insurer reviews the damage and approves repairs, the sooner we can order parts and schedule work.

Respond quickly to requests. When we call about additional damage, part choices, or insurance questions, prompt responses keep things moving. A 24-hour delay in getting back to us can push your delivery date back several days.

Be flexible on part choices. If an OEM part is backordered for 3 weeks but a quality aftermarket alternative is available in 2 days, consider the tradeoff. We’ll always give you options.

Drop off your vehicle promptly. Once we have parts and an open bay, delays in dropping off your car push everything back. We understand scheduling challenges, but earlier is better.

What to Expect During the Repair

At Rogue Auto Body, we provide regular updates throughout your repair. You’ll hear from us when your vehicle enters the shop, when we discover any additional damage, when parts arrive, and when the repair is complete and ready for pickup.

We give you a realistic timeline estimate upfront—not an optimistic best-case scenario, but what we actually expect based on current parts availability and shop schedule. If something changes that will affect your delivery date, we let you know immediately rather than waiting until the original date passes.

For longer repairs, we coordinate rental car coverage with your insurance and can help arrange transportation. Being without your vehicle for 2-3 weeks is inconvenient, but having a rental makes it manageable.
